A modern, sustainable tiered meadow
This elevated, steeply sloping rocky garden was a real challenge but a genuine triumph. We re-used all the stone extracted in creating tiered-levels, cutting out expensive removal costs and instead adding them to the gabion baskets, which bring a contemporary touch to this meadow garden. The paved dining area nearest the house and a light baton fence add a splash of modernity. Planted up with wildflowers and birches, the terraces have year-round interest and colour, each year blooming into a lush pollinator-heaven.

Gabion baskets make a bold structural statement but will blend in to the background when the meadow is in bloom.

Pollinators love the wildflower turf and the small trees will grow proportionally, bringing height to the wide terraces.

The stairs bring a formal touch, blending contemporary slabs with traditional dry stone walling.

The topped gabions give easy access to beds for maintenance.

The orginal garden was largely unused, with steep slopes, but it did give us lots of stone to work with.
